A barbecue might be a simple way to describe a calçotada, but for us Catalans, it’s much more than that: it’s a joyful tradition celebrated with friends and family. While grilled meat is part of the experience, the star of the show is el calçot: a unique, long green onion that’s charred over an open flame. To fully enjoy a calçotada, you must dip the onions in a rich almond sauce (which even non-onion lovers can’t resist), enjoy it with bread rubbed with tomato, and finish with baked sweet potatoes or fresh strawberries with cream. It’s a feast for all the senses!
